Miracles in Copiapo, Chile
➤Our team had been traveling from city to city headed north from the south, conducting pastor/leader seminars in each major city and in many small cities. We were preaching, teaching, and praying in various churches throughout each city and holding weekend meetings with all the congregations gathered in large venues that could hold hundreds or more believers.
I would teach and preach the same truths to all the churches, whether Pentecostal, Baptist, Methodist, Nazarene, Independent, Presbyterian, whatever.
When we moved to South America, the Holy Spirit sent me without a denominational label, telling me that without that label, He would use me in every church that professed Jesus Christ – and He did just that!
You might imagine the scene. Our team, usually of five or more, including me, traveled in our minivan throughout Chile, Peru, and Argentina, ministering to countless churches. It was not unusual for me to preach or teach in 3 to 5 venues on a Saturday and some Sundays – that was after meetings sometimes on Thursdays and Fridays. Other members of our team preached too.
While traveling, we prayed fervently (really), we read the Word together and shared, we worshiped in song and talked of nothing but our Lord, of His Spirit, and what He may do in our upcoming meetings. It was electrifying! Our pre-planned journeys lasted from 30 to 120 days at the time, after which I’d return to the USA to my dear family, and our team would plan for the next journey.
On one trip, we arrived to Copiapo, Chile, located in the middle of the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert. The churches of Copiapo had heard of our meetings by now, as news had been spreading among the evangelical church community throughout the whole country. Our first meeting in Copiapo was in a large auditorium with hundreds or perhaps more than a thousand believers representing all the evangelical churches.
The atmosphere was filled with expectation. We could feel it when we walked into the room.
When we arrived at the meeting, I sensed the Holy Spirit telling me to ask Daniel Orellana, our gifted acoustical guitarist and worship leader, to simply play and lead a worship song to Jesus – which he did. Everyone immediately joined in worship so enthusiastically that I was led to ask all pastors present to come line up across the front to receive people who wanted prayer.
Immediately after they came to the front, people rushed up for prayer – many falling on their knees before they even got to the front! There was weeping everywhere, there was loud repentance, there were healings, people delivered from demonic spirits, lost people professing Jesus for the first time, you name it! We continued in an atmosphere of worship with hundreds still worshiping for at least an hour or maybe two. If I remember correctly, I didn’t even speak other than to pray and direct the leaders.
It’s one of many meetings I’ll never forget!
The takeaways from this meeting are many: first, the Spirit of God is sovereign and can move anytime, anywhere He wants to; second, the Spirit of God is sovereign and DOES MOVE anytime, anywhere He wants to; third, the Spirit of God had inspired those many believers to pursue Him, perhaps for weeks before we arrived, asking Him to move in their midst.
There is no doubt that they had pursued Him extraordinarily, and He responded extraordinarily!
So, my fellow believer. Let us not box in the God who created us, the world, and all that is in it!
Say it with me, brother, sister: “I WILL NOT BOX GOD IN!”
I testify that these things are true to the best of my remembrance, in Jesus’ name, and God has done the same thing zillions of times among His people for centuries, whether in groups of two or three, or two or three thousand!
He will do it again, if you’ll invite Him to. He’s going to do it again for all those who love Him. Nearly thirty years ago, the Holy Spirit showed me that He’s going to revive us in such a way that we never need reviving again!
Then, He’s going to come for us – His glorious church, His spotless bride, made beautiful by His blood, His Word, His Spirit, and His grace poured out on His people with living faith!
Watching His plan unfold,
