The Book of Enoch, Another Deceptive Distraction

ARTICLE SYNOPSIS

  • In an age of deception, the Book of Enoch is not simply a harmless curiosity. It can be detrimental to one’s faith.
  • Using Enoch as a ‘key’ to Genesis or prophecy denies that the Bible is sufficient.
  • Enoch may fascinate curiosity seekers, but it does not mature the body or prepare us as the bride of Christ.

The article argues that Christian fascination with the Book of Enoch is a deceptive distraction from Scripture, from growing in spiritual maturity, and from faithful discipleship in an age already saturated with confusion and error.

Mark frames our time as “the age of deception,” warning that Satan exploits curiosities to draw believers away from sober vigilance in the Word and the Spirit. In this context, the modern popularity of the Book of Enoch—through videos, podcasts, and prophecy teaching—is seen as part of a larger pattern: believers chasing “mysteries,” hidden codes, and speculative narratives (Nephilim, UFOs, aliens as demons) instead of focusing on Christ’s character built up in our own lives, such as holiness, faith, good works, and obedience.

Enoch is grouped with apocryphal gospels, best‑selling “mystery” books, near‑death heaven tourism, and commercialized prophecy materials that promise “secret revelation” but mainly feed the soulish appetite for novelty.

Theologically, this article emphasizes that Enoch is not the inspired Word of God, was never accepted as such by mainstream Judaism or the historic church, and therefore carries no doctrinal weight for Christians.

Pastorally, Mark urges believers to resist “decoding” the Bible through esoteric systems or extra‑biblical texts and instead to abide in Christ through Scripture, prayer, repentance, love, and everyday obedience.

Time spent obsessing over Enoch, the Nephilim, and hidden mysteries neglects what we do know to do: grow in love and in the knowledge of God, share the gospel with the lost world, and prepare spiritually for soon-coming trials for which most are not ready, and for meeting Jesus.

The Book of Enoch, Another Deceptive Distraction

➤The abundance of interest in the book of Enoch reveals two things to me: first, the immaturity of the Church at large; and second, that we are at the very tip end of this age, when, according to the New Testament, deception will be almost overwhelming. Christian, be vigilant! This is the age of deception!

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (I Peter 5:8).

Adhering to and abiding in God’s Word, and having a knowing relationship with His Holy Spirit, has never been more critical!

In recent years, the Book of Enoch has attracted significant attention among Christians. It’s often featured in videos, podcasts, and social media as if it unlocks hidden truths about the Bible or offers secret insights into the end times.

But for anyone following Jesus, the Book of Enoch doesn’t serve as a foundation for faith, obedience, or spiritual maturity. It doesn’t help us bear fruit or make us better disciples; it is a distraction from what our Lord teaches us about being His followers. And besides all that, the mythological tales in the Book of Enoch, especially those regarding the Nephilim in Genesis chapter six, feed right into the current conspiracy theories about life on other planets, UFOs, and even aliens among us!

There is other life out there, for sure. UFOs are real, too, and so are “aliens,” but they are demonic spirits!

The Bible tells us all about them! This is nothing new. This is not the time to fall for the world’s narrative. They are ignorant of the things of God, but we are not. The Bible, when read under the light of His Spirit, reveals all we need to know about anything we are unsure about. Leave what we are still unsure about to God.

We are called to “abide in Him,” in His Word, and to walk in His Spirit. We are not told to give our attention to the kinds of things that attract the soul, which includes feeding on the curiosities of our mind. When we feed our soulish man, we are supporting our old man, not our new man.

And when we give the Enemy an inch, he’ll take a mile from us!  Don’t give him that inch!

The Apostle John recorded Jesus teaching us what to do to become His true disciples:

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free’” (John 8:31-32).

There has always been a large segment of God’s people who chase curiosities wherever their curiosities take them. And the Enemy gives them plenty to feed on.

Big publishing houses have marketed several successful extra-biblical books in recent years, such as The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Mary, The Gospel of Philip, The Gospel of Jude, and others.

Be vigilant. Recognize the pattern. The distractions from the simplicity of the gospel and Christian discipleship are many, and the deception from these sources is at an all-time high.

We should put the Book of Enoch in the same genre as other mysterious “Christian” books that have been mass-produced and widely read over the last thirty years or so, including The Gospel of Thomas, The Gospel of Mary, The Gospel of Philip, The Gospel of Jude, and others.

And do you recall other types of mystery books, such as The Shack and Jesus Calling, or what about the movie titled Wicked, another deceiver for the masses that many Christians fell for? We don’t have the time to take up the serious issues there.

For Example, Jonathan Cahn’s Mysteries

You are probably familiar with Cahn, a well-known Messianic Christian teacher and author. But in case you’re not, he has written some 8 to 10 books in which he claims to reveal “secrets” or “mysteries” from the Bible known only to those who understand Hebrew, and more specifically, things revealed only to him.

While many believers find his work fascinating and read him religiously, I have always been skeptical and have sensed great apprehension about the content of his books.

Cahn claims special-revelation knowledge unlocked by hidden patterns in the Hebrew text. There is no doubt about God speaking through Hebrew in ways that we won’t find Him doing in any other language. But the Bible plainly tells us that God teaches us by revelation through His Spirit, by revealing His Word, and by Spiritual gifts, all leading to spiritual growth, greater fruitfulness, and a more perfect faith and love.

Decoding the Bible is not part of learning the will and way of the Lord through His plainly written Word.

While Cahn’s stories are intriguing, they serve more to satisfy curiosity than to encourage the provision of sound truth that builds believers in character and obedience toward genuine spiritual maturity.

And what about all the books where people claim to have died and gone to heaven, each one of them with different stories, and sometimes with contrasting stories about what they saw or experienced? Multitudes in the world and in the Church shape their theology on the basis of these testimonies, usually painting quite a different picture from what the Word of God teaches.

All these and more add to the confusion and deception created throughout the Christian community and the world today. Together, they truly mark how close we are to the end of this age.

The heavy commercialization of “mystery” books, along with similar products in the Christian marketplace, is not in sync with the Bible’s pattern of ministry. God’s revealed truth should be offered freely to all, or for modest support, not packaged as secret insight to be bought and sold only to those who have access to it and can afford it.

In my opinion, Cahn’s secret mystery books fall into the category of merchandised “revelation” and are known only to an exclusive few, not to the majority of the world’s population. And that’s where many others fall, too, including the Book of Enoch.

The Inspired Word of God

The New Testament directs us to grow through the clear teaching of God’s Word as it is written and explained by those whom the Spirit has gifted to teach, shepherd, and equip the saints for everyday faithfulness.

Most conservative Christian teachers point out that Enoch isn’t included in the Bible and wasn’t accepted as inspired Scripture by the mainstream Jewish community or the historic Christian church.

This is important because Christians are not called to build their lives on speculation. Paul warned Timothy against getting caught up in “myths and endless genealogies,” saying that these lead to speculation instead of genuine faith (I Timothy 1:4).

Today, it’s easy to get swept up in fringe teachings, conspiracy theories, secret codes, and dramatic claims about books outside the Bible. These distractions multiply confusion among the members of His body, leading to arguments rather than to growth in faith, holiness, and love.

The Book of Enoch Carries No Weight for Us

The issue isn’t that the Book of Enoch is old—it’s that it isn’t Scripture. Even though the book of Jude in the New Testament refers to Enoch, conservative scholars agree that quoting from a source doesn’t mean the whole book is inspired. Jude (vs. 14-15) can reference a true statement from Enoch without endorsing the entire book, just as Paul sometimes quoted pagan poets without making their writings part of the inspired Word.

So, Christians shouldn’t treat the Book of Enoch as a lost companion to Genesis, a secret guide to angels and demons, or a key to unlocking or confirming anything in the New Testament. It can give us a glimpse of what some ancient Jews believed, but it doesn’t tell the church what to believe at all.

It’s not needed or useful for true doctrine, for godly living, or for being made ready for Christ’s return.

Getting caught up in unusual ideas can seem deep, but it often keeps people from growing in real ways.

It’s easy to spend hours chasing theories about Enoch, the Nephilim, hidden histories, and mysterious beings, and yet spend very little time on prayer, repentance, reading Scripture, sharing the gospel, or loving our neighbors in practical ways. Paul’s concern in I Timothy wasn’t just that some teachings were strange, but that they distracted people from living out their faith and led to pointless arguments.

That, together with deception, is one of the great spiritual dangers of our time.

A believer can know countless theories and still neglect the plain commands of Christ. It is possible to become more excited about strange material than about the gospel itself. Yet Jesus defined eternal life in very simple and profound terms: “And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3, ESV).

Again, the Christian life is not mainly about decoding the obscure.

These Should Have Our Attention

We don’t need more distractions, and the world won’t benefit from our distractions at all. What’s needed is a renewed focus on what matters most.

As followers of Jesus, we should focus on the truths God has already made abundantly clear in His Word and the responsibilities He has entrusted to us:

  • Seek to know better God our Heavenly Father, His Son our Savior, and His Spirit!
  • Build faith and obedience by reading and studying His Word! There’s plenty there!
  • Grow in love toward God and others. It is love that covers a multitude of sins! And it is by our love for one another that we will please God the most and show the world who God really is!
  • Prepare for many things that may come upon the earth before we are caught up as His bride! Be fruitful now. We do not know what tomorrow may bring. I believe there will be tests and trials in the near future that we’ve never experienced. The time to prepare is now!

Let’s Not Waste Our Time, or God’s Time Either

The Book of Enoch might be of interest to historians, but it shouldn’t be a main focus for Christians. It’s not the voice of the Shepherd, the rule for our faith, or the light God has given us to follow.

There’s too much at stake and too many real needs around us for believers to get lost in distractions.

We are complete in Him!

“As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in Him with thanksgiving.

“Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.

“For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power” (Colossians 2:6-10).
